As a parent - what would you do?

I think everyone would handle this situation differently, but the fact that she divorces him and cuts all ties between him and his son is a little harsh. Not that it would NEVER happen - just doesn't seem like the norm, is all. I could see the wife resenting the husband, him still drifting into alcoholism, and them falling into a bitter divorce due to drinking and drifting apart relationship wise. The part that seems the most unbelievable is cutting him out of his sons life.
