Good stock car for first car?

What is a good first car that runs well right from the factory? I am planning to get my first car in about a year or so and instead of tuning and modifying it with after market parts, i'd rather just save all of the money that i'd use for the modifications and just put it towards another better car in the future. So what is a car that comes good right out of the box and is't too too expensive? The main features i need in my car is AWD (or 4WD) for the winter, fuel efficiency, and cheap/easy to maintain. I have no clue what my budget will be for my first car, but i assume since i come from an average income family it wont be much more than about 8,000 to 12,000 dollars, give or take. I have no problem getting an older used car, as long as it has what i need. Thanks.
